The sea is stained in red and it’s not because of the climate effects of nature.
not-for-climate-effects-of-nature

It’s because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.

This happens every year in Feroe iland in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY?
To show that they are adults and mature…. BULLLLsh

In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty “supporting like a spectator”

Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, it’s near instinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship

They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child.

The biggest shame is, people posting stuff like this, without doing a tiny bit of research first. This isn’t denmark.

It’s a part of Denmark. But we don’t have anything to do with the Feroe culture and we certainly does not interfer with it. That is not something denmark agrees with, but we are not going to mess with them.

It’s a part of Denmark yes… But it isn’t Denmark. It’s the Faroe.
How often do you reefer to Greenland as Denmark? They’re a part of us but they’re basically their own country.

We have no control of what happens on those islands…

Let me, in good order – remind you, that the Faroe Islands legislate their own fishing quotas and everything else in direct correlation with fishing, and therefore stands outside the danish law on this subject… Denmark might be a big shame, but at least not when it comes to Faroe Island whaling…!

First, this happens on the Faroe Islands, not Denmark. The islands have their own government. They are as much a part of Denmark as the USA is a part of England.

Second, the dolphins and/or pilot whales are not “brutally tortured by hooks until they drown”. Nor are they endangered. They are killed as quickly as possible with knives – which should be clear to anyone looking at the pictures – and they’re well within the ranges of acceptable numbers even after the hunting.

Third, it is not a “ritual of adulthood”. Most of the hunters are under 30, yes, due to the fact that it entitles the wrestling of hundreds of 3-ton animals. Also, the Faroe Islands are essentially a ball of rocks with a couple of sheep. The pilot whales are a major source of their income as well as a source of food.

Lastly, I do not actually agree with the hunting that occurs on the Faroe Islands. I do not agree with any large-scale hunting or fishing and I do not eat marine animals. I do, however, recognize the necessity and approve of the method in which it’s done. It looks messy, but all-in-all it’s done about as nicely as hunting marine animals can be done.

      Okay, this article is laking:
First – this is not a dolphin, it’s pilot whales, they are not even close to extinsion, which you would know if you actually read more into the subjekt.
Second – this is not Denmark but one of our territories/colonies. Denmark is a very flat country, so mountains in the background would not be an option in a picture from there.
Third – no they are not brutally murdered, what happens is that they use a “hook”, which ain’t even sharp but have a round end and plug it into the whales blowhole, and after that they cut the neck with this really fast device-knife-thingy, i don’t know what it’s called.
All in all this “articel” is very poorly written and the author clearly haven’t reseached the subjekt to the fullest or even bothered to look into it the slightest.
if you really want to post your opinion on something, research it please! you make a country seem bad over nothing!

Seems like propaganda gets to everyone.

The Faroes are an independents state with protection from Denmark that means they get support form Denmark that means Danes have some of their taxes spent on the Faroes. Subsidiies and preferential loans come from Denmark.
But the faroese refuse to abide by the same rules Denmark has with regard to fishing. They fish (for profit) as much as they like an sell it through Danish access to Europe at the same time ignoring European market fiehries regualtions. Subsidies were used to support their economy by Denmark so they can have once of the Highest standards of living in Europe/. They are nowhere near starving. They’ll say things are expensive there and that’s true compared with much of Europe but guess what the salaries more than cater for it. Regular sevice from Denmark to there brings all the modern conveniences AND food to their homes so they aren’t some poor isllaisolate little community that exist from the sea. It’s a modern Island dwelling community stuck in the dark ages trying to hold on to some historic practices that are unnecessary and cruel (consider putting yourself in the place of one of the animals for instance). No one on those islands is hungry. They say this is free food for the community big deal it’s also the life of whole communities of animals that meet their ends here. NOT one or two like inuit traditionalists practice these days but whole pods. Whole family groups at a time. Pregnant females, young are all fair game to the BIG men with hooks and powerful boats and satelite navigation and radios (what would the forefathers say about that?).
So the give and take is one way.
As for the animals do you think they are treated like the cows pigs or whatever from farmed sources? They are chased for hours till they fearfully become entrapped in water too difficult to swim properly, they cannot move around that and at the same time one by one are dragged using hooks up the beaches to be hacked at with knives by youths and men only (why can’t the girls and women do it? Exclusive society I don’t think. Its a demonstration of bravado with a self serving desire to furnish your own belly at the expense of the animals rigth to live.
End it it’s barbaric and perhaps use some of the natural resources to improve your lives. For instance try greenhouses you’ve got plenty wind use it for power but the cry of “it will spoil the scenery” will be heard, I say “Grow up!” we’re all on the same rock in space and need to quit destroying it for our own vanity and pleasure

Wrong, this is not Denmark, it is the Faroe Islands (Denmark has no mountains!). And seriously?! It’s like this article was written by Sister America (SatW). The article creator did not do sufficient research (or proper employment of spellcheck, a tool that have many of you other commenters seem to have likewise ignored). And do you want to know why those pictures look so bad? It’s because blood runs when in water!
And if any of you eat meat, just answer this: could you kill the cow for the steak? If your reply is ‘no’, then you should get off these people’s backs and stop being hypocrites.

        Exactly!
It is an amateur written, incorrect “article” which if I were the writer I would take it down due to embarrassment at how they didn’t do any research whatsoever.
I hear things against Asian countries killing whales for food, and its the same thing as killing cows for steak.
Actually, the killings of marine animals are humane compared to land animals, especially poultry.

This is funny coming from a person in a country where people still burn the widows alive when their husband dies, just to name ONE thing, and which have massive problems with poverty and malnutrition despite having millions of acres of fertile farming soil.

Secondly: Dolphins don’t go that far north, and the pictures show that it’s whales (which everyone else in the world seems to know).

Thirdly, and most importantly: The Faroe Islands is basically mostly rocks sticking out of the ocean, with VERY VERY little fertile farm land. They, therefore, cannot GROW enough food to support the population (as opposed to India which CAN, but chooses not to, or rather: Chooses not to support the population), and are therefore dependent on what they can catch in the sea.

Furthermore, I agree with Leah’s post as of Jan 12. 5.03 AM.

    6. Christian
      January 15, 2012 at 6:52 am

First thing – they live on a cluster of islands in the middle of the ocean and have no bigger vegetation other than grass so they can’t support any farm animals and have to live of sea creatures and sheep.

Seconds – every chicken, pig or cow you dimwit stuff your head with is getting they throats cut the only difference is that this dos not take place in a slaughter house. And yes it looks more brutal because of all the blood but they are big game of cause they’ll bleed like hell.

Third thing even thus The Faroe Islands is under denmark tehy are a self-governing country.

and the last thing – once agian they are big game – very big game so it needs to big strong men who’s handling them and not old and weak people.

get your fact straight before you start pointing fingers.

Isnt it importent to also keep the old traditions? Else that would kill a whole culture.. Think over that!

    8. Christian Petersen
      January 31, 2012 at 2:04 pm

As a danish and an intelligent, reasonable person, i feel it’s my duty to help set a few things straight. I don’t know who is responsible for this article, but it’s a masterpiece of slander and an insult to my country.

      1. The whales being killed are not dolphins, they’re pilot whales, and they’re nowhere near in danger of extinction.

      2. The sea i stained red, because the iron in blood has a very high pigmentation. Do you have any idea how much you can dilute blood in water and still see the red color?

      3. The Pharoes, where this is happening, is a smallcluster of isolated islands, they have basically no natural resources of any import, and their main sources are food, and, guess what, WHALING. They kill whales for food, not for some bullshit ritual, and the teens help out in order to support their families. As for the huge crowds gathering, of course they want to support the whalers, the whalers are seeing to it that they and their families don’t STARVE!

      4. A whale does NOT make a cry “like a baby” when it does. Sure, it does make a cry, pretty much everything living does when it does. And the whalers don’t use hooks to kill the whales, they use hatchets to sever the mayor arteries, seeing to it that the whale dies as quickly and painlessly as possible. The hooks are used to tow the whales unto shore AFTER they die.

Whoever wrote this article is grossly misleading people, twisting the facts in order to smear a danish colony. Be glad this isn’t the old days, sir, or the vikings would be knocking at your door when they heard about this. If it was up to me you’d certainly get a very intimite tour of the whaling process. from the whale’s perspective.

I could explain to you in so many ways how wrong you all are and how these species are not extinct and how many whale species are endangering the eco system due to overpopulation and how in fact over 20 countries INCLUDING the USA and Canada are also hunting whales

ANd how this is more humane than mass production animal farms while pigs are as intelligent as dogs actually and more intelligent than that species of whale and so on.

Farao island and Denmark are two completley different things, in the same way that Cuba And U.S.A isen’t the same thing. also, they make it out to be a lot worse than it is. don’t trust this web bage, they just want more people to visit and read their crap

          1. January 12, 2012 at 8:14 pm

well, i understand that Faroe is a sovereign country under Denmark’s government. Cuba is not USA’s colony or tied to USA in any way except that USA has a military base there (against Cuba’s wishes), so if you want to make a USA analogy, then use Puerto Rico, which actually is a free state under USA’s government, and yet it is culturally a very different country from USA.
it certainly seems to me that this article is badly researched in general, but there’s always douches writing whatever fiction they feel like in their blogs as if it were fact.

They are killing the whales FOR FOOD!! They don’t have the privilege of Mass producing Cow farms! Also, while I’m at it perhaps Humanity is going downhill because there are so many people that are so willing to believe anything they are told. Do you know how they hunted in the stone age? Their weapons were made of stone, not processed metal. Stone does not cut as well as metal, and so would take much longer to actually use. Stone Age weapons skillfully used would be more painful than sloppy work from a modern weapon. Also, read the other comments.

actually, as has been said many times before: First, not really denmark here, denmark’s landscape more closely resembles the great plains of the US, except quite a bit greener. The faroe islands are devoid of agricultural resources, save maybe a few sheep here and there. and the “dolphins” are actually a subspecies of whale nowhere near extinction. intelligent maybe, but just as edible. Which brings me to the next point: it’s not a rite of passage, as this article would lead you to believe, but rather a means of obtaining food-a concept no different than fishing for tuna and slaughtering cows. who can say just how intelligent cows are or aren’t? yet it’s ok for you to eat a steak, but not ok for another country to kill a whale for meat…makes you a hypocrite. Lastly, the poor spelling and grammar, along with a clear lack of research into the topic…..this article reeks of extremist ecoterrorism groups like PETA.

Not only that but hundreds of thousands of sharks, many which are endangered species are caught in nets only to have all of their fins cut off and tossed back in the ocean alive to slowly skink to the bottom and suffer a long, agonizing death. Pilot whales, which are the acual name of the animals in this article, are not endangered, and less than 1,000 are killed each year, and they are not killed for comercial profit. Turkeys are fattened to the point where their legs break under their weight, chickens are fed chicken, and many cows are fed meat, and other things they were not meant to injest as well. If you want to make a stand you should set your prorities straight. These whales are killed rather humanely- especially compared to the sharks, and they have it good; they are free and wild. It’s no different thant hunting deer, or anything else. People just get touchy because they think Whales and Dolphens are all automatically kind and friendly, which they are not neccicerily.

First, they’re not Calderon dolphins, they’re pilot whales. Pilot Whales are not near extinction. Second, they kill them to eat them. Thirdly, they don’t use hooks, they use axes and knifes to kill them, only hooks to bring them in. They don’t kill to do some barbaric ritual of manhood, and besides, this is much more humane than other countries that mass produced their sick animals.

Maybe we should sue the people misrepresenting Denmark this way. Number one fact – DENMARK HAS NO MOUNTAINS. This is the Faroe Islands
Number two fact – THE FAROES HAVE THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT. Denmark is not responsible for this.
Number three fact – THERE IS VERY LITTLE FARMABLE LAND ON THE FAROES. Therefore, they cannot grow much food to sustain them, and must rely on the sea.
Number four fact – THEY AREN’T DOLPHINS! Those are pilot whales.

Even Wikipedia has better information on this than this stupid alarmist article!

      2. They have nothing else to eat.
      3. It’s teenagers and young adults performing the act because the young and old aren’t able bodied enough.
      4. They’re Pilot Whales, not the fictional Calderon Dolphin.
      5. Pilot Whales are not endangered.
      6. They’re killing them swiftly, not making them suffer.

“… sue them …” How exactly would that be accomplished? Why is everyone getting so upset about pilot whales being hunted? Great white sharks, I dare say, are in greater danger of extinction from over-fishing. Now there is an aquatic animal that could benefit from a few alarmist animal-lover articles.

  11. November 16, 2009 at 5:27 pm

it’s not a tradtion. they are killing the whales for food. the Faroe islanders live on a couple rocks with a few sheep in the middle of the ocean. And whales have been a major staple in their diet for thousands of years. Asking them to give up whale hunting s like asking Americans to give up Christmas, and stop eating..

as a journalist, you should know that, that isn’t Denmark it’s the Faeroe Islands, which is a part of Denmark. and those aren’t dolphins, they’re pilot whales and they are not considered to be even close to being extinct! AND it’s mostly grow up men, who have experience with the killing who participate and it is in no way a manhood approval, it’s for the food! check your facts before commenting. don’t be blind and stupid, it never resolves anything to judge something out from the lies and some stupid ignorant person!

Faroes do not have your huge slaughter houses, where the animals suffer from birth to death, and machines kill and prepare your food, ready for the freezers in your huge supermarkets. our animals live freely on the mountains and in the sea, until they’re killed with skills, so they do not suffer in any way! of course none of you knows this, because it’s so goddamn easy to justify your own dirtiness by hating on our free islands, so no one looks at your torture-houses where animals suffer all their lives. stupid stupid stupid! get a life!!!

But the person didn’t say those things. All they said was that the pictures were gross. Which is true, blood in water can make violence look worse than it actually is. If you look at the people they don’t have blood on them, even when apparently surrounded by it. That is because blood retains its color even at low concentrations (Water looks red even if there isn’t a lot of blood in it).

Though to be fair, big animals do have a lot of blood, which is why there is a huge area of it.

      January 12, 2012 at 3:34 pm

One question; Do you eat meat? That fresh, ready-to-go meat you buy at the supermarket? That is ten times worse than pilot-whaling (which is shown on the picture) where animals live in too small cages their whole lives, never get to see the sun, dies in their own feeces and loses bodyparts due to infections. Only reason this LOOKS barbaric is because the blood runs down in the ocean, instead of a drain.

This way of getting food is better for the inviroment (Instead of shipping meat from Europe) and it’s way more humane than breeding pigs, chickens and cows. It’s well controlled and has strict rules.

…1) Its not Denmark is Faroe.
2)Those dolphins are not anywhere near extinct
3)There is very little food in Faroe, is rock island. The people only eat sheep and sea creatures
      4) They kill dolphins just how in other countries kill chickens, cows goats etc. They are not endangered they are an important source of food.
5)The people in Faroe make sure that they do not kill more than necessary. They balance between feeding their population and making sure these dolphins don’t make it to the endangered list.
6)The reason it looks so bloody is because they are n the sea and blood spills everywhere. Thrust me USA fishing ships and other countries fishing ships kill far way more fish in one hour than the people do in these pictures.
      7)Get your facts right!!

I was reading the comments on this ignorant article, not planning on responding, until I found yours. I found I had to respond because you are not only insulting one group of people, but two, and I think you need to be corrected, just in case your ignorance is infectious.

First off, this is in Faroe, an Island belonging to Denmark, which has about the same relation to Denmark that Canada does to England. The animals they are killing are pilot whales, not dolphins. There is no such thing as a calderon dolphin. Dolphins contain high levels of mercury, and are dangerous to eat. The people are not killing the whales for ritualistic purposes, they are using them as a source of food. Faroe is rocky, and has infertile soil, so they can’t grow enough food to support themselves. They live primarily off of sheep and the sea. This is actually more environmentally sound, because they have to import less resources from other countries.

Concerning your comment about Canadians eating seals, much of what I said earlier also applies. This primarily takes place in Nunavut and the other Territories by first nations people. They eat seals, whales, and fish because it is part of their culture, but also because, for most of the year, the ground is frozen and nothing grows. They take only what they need, and waste nothing. They barely effect the seal population. The main reason some species of seals are endangered is because of Global Warming, and other people hunting and poaching them for their fur.

While I agree that this is terrible, and that it should be stopped, people forget to read what it says in between the pictures. It states that it’s: “The Faeroe Islands”. While the Faeroe Islands might be an island that belongs to Denmark, they govern themselves, have their own leaders and the like. Autonomous, might be the word. The Danes have nothing to do with it. It doesn’t make it any less wrong, it’s just the wrong country getting blamed for it.

Have you ever heard of the dark ages and the stuff that happened then?!

        “Most Cruel Thing ever”
Here’s some things for the google search:

        Vlad the impaler
        Spanish Inquisition
        Spanish Incan Smallpox
        Trail of Tears
        Medieval Torture
        Drawn and Quartered
        “The Rape of Nanking”
        Holocaust

I would like it if other people would add more, but make sure it is definitely worse, and will get the need results in the first few links. If people could get the stuff on how mass produced livestock are treated… I’m afraid I haven’t researched that.

They are not endangered dolphins, they are whale killed for food, just like in your local slaughter house. Are you all vegetarians??

    1. November 9, 2011 at 6:09 pm

yes they are killed for food , can you eat all of those dolphins that they have killED??? it’s stupidity and such a unpleasant doings of us… live peacefully because nature or mother earth is very angry for our doings… did all that dolphins have done wrong to all of uS??

      1. Lia
        January 30, 2012 at 12:33 am

Those aren’t dolphins, they’re Pilot Whales and yes, all of them are eaten. There’s barely any farmland there so the people kill the whales (which are not endangered) so they can survive. They’re not killed with hooks either and it only looks so bloody because they’re killed in the water. Also, they don’t make a ‘cry like a baby’ when they die. It’s for survival not a right of passage.

As for what ‘Mother Earth’ would think, maybe ‘she’ would understand because human are doing it purely for the sake of survival.

      2. Molly
        January 30, 2012 at 6:50 am

They are feeding their entire population, until it comes time to hunt these whales again {I believe it is an annual thing? With the migration patterns of the creatures,} So while One person killing all of those animals Would be wasteful, it will All get eaten over the year.
Also, You speak of Mother Nature, it begs the question, have You ever stopped to Contemplate the very Nature of the Natural World? There is a harmony, there is a balance, and it is kept that way through the food chain. Since when has nature Ever been this kind and gentle entity? Those high on the food chain, Kill and Eat, those lower on the food chain. That is the way the world works and We, as humans, are very much a part of it. It has nothing to do with what the Whales have Done, it is about how these people Live.
ALSO, these are whales, I’m sure You have eyes, they should be used :)

Here i am quoting the details from hoax-slayer site. killing of pilot whales dolphins in the Faeroe Islands and includes a series of photographs that graphically depict this bloody slaughter. The message calls on Denmark, of which the Faroe Islands is a part, to stop the slaughter and urges recipients to pass on the message in order to raise awareness of this big issue.

The claims in the email are true to me. Such whale hunts do indeed occur in the Faroe Islands, usually during the summer months. The Faroe Islands are made up of a number of small inhabited islands . Each year, Thousands of Long-finned Pilot Whales dolphins are killed in such slaughters. The hunts are non-commercial and anyone in the island communities can join in killing festival. When a school of whales is spotted close to shore, messengers are dispatched to inform local inhabitants of the particular island involved. A formation of small boats is then used to drive the whales ashore, where they beach themselves in the shallow water and are killed by waiting islanders. A special whaling knife is used to sever the animal’s spine near the dorsal fin. Information on a Faroe Islands website about whaling in the province describes the killing process:

Men gather on the shore to kill the beached whales. Ideally, most of the whales will strand far enough up on shore that it is unnecessary to secure them. However, those remaining in the shallows must be secured and hauled closer. Traditionally, this is done by driving a steel hook, or gaff, with a rope attached to it into the back of the whale. A new blunt hook inserted into an air sac in the whale’s blowhole has now been widely tested in practice and it is hoped that this new equipment may eventually replace the traditional gaff as the standard method for securing whales. The whale is killed using a sharp knife to cut down to sever the spinal cord, which also severs the major blood supply to the brain, ensuring both the loss of consciousness and death within seconds.

These whale kills have occurred in the Faroe Islands for hundreds of years and are considered by Islanders to be an important part of their social culture. It is generally only Faroese men who take part in the killings while female islanders look on. The whale hunts have caused international outrage and have been roundly condemned as unnecessary and barbaric by conservation and animal rights groups around the world. However, Faroe Islanders vigorously defend their right to engage in the hunts. A Wikipedia entry on the subject notes:

Most Faroese maintain that it is their right to catch pilot whales given that they have done so for centuries. The Faroese whalers defend their actions before international organizations like Greenpeace with three arguments: one, that grindadráp is not a hunt as such, but a dráp meaning a kill (ie that they do not regularly take to sea just to hunt for pilot whales, but only kill those which are sighted swimming to close at land); two, that the pilot whale hunt does not exist for commercial reasons, but for internal food distribution among households; and three, they do not believe the pilot whale to be an endangered species.

They further argue that most people in the modern world have become so far removed from the harsh realities of animal food production that they have formulated unrealistic notions of how food actually gets to their tables.

However, conservation organizations do not consider these factors to be valid arguments for the continuation of the slaughters. They argue that modern day Faroe Islanders have ample food and do not require whale meat to survive as in earlier centuries. Moreover, they point out that Pilot Whales in the region are known to have high levels of mercury, PCBs and environmental poisons and excessive consumption of whale meat could be detrimental to the health of Islanders.

In spite of its cultural significance, the continuation of the practise is very difficult to convincingly defend and even some Faroe Islanders have began opposing it.

It should be noted that, although the Faroe Islands are indeed a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, they are largely an autonomous entity. A home-rule law was brought into effect in 1948 which gave the Faroe Islands a considerable degree of political independence from Denmark. The Faroese are self governing in most matters other than foreign affairs, the legal system and defence. Furthermore, although Denmark is certainly part of the European Union, the Faroe Islands are not. Information about the Faroe Islands on theUK Trade & Investment website notes:

Denmark granted the Faroe Islands a measure of Home Rule as a self-governing populace in 1948. Over the years the ties to Denmark have gradually relaxed so that, whilst being part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the islands have their own parliament and flag and issue their own bank notes and stamps. The special status of the Faroe Islands means that their policies and tax regimes do not always coincide, indeed some differ greatly, with those of Denmark. For example, the Faroe Islands are not a member of the European Union and all trade is governed by special treaties with the EU. In November 2003 the Faroe Islands agreed with the EU and acceeded to membership of the Pan-European System of Accumulation of Origin. In principle this is a mutual free-trade agreement.

Thus, demand that Denmark put a stop to the slaughter may not be the most effective approach. The continuation of international condemnation and pressure to stop the whale kills might be more effectively aimed directly to the Faroe Islanders themselves.

I can’t believe people are so cruel.WHY dolphins?WHY animals?WHAT wrong did they do to feel what they felt when were killing??If it’s fun to you, people, just go and kill each other, not animals, that are all innocent of your stupid “tradicions”!
HOW can people do this?and how can we make them STOP??It’s unbelievable it’s HAPPENING in the world…

no, the guys in Denmark are still sane, so are the guys in Faroe Island (where this is happening – it’s NOT denmark) – IT IS NOT DOLPHINS stupid.. it’s whales.. and they are killed for food, at least these guys are man enough to kill their own animals to bring food on the table – are you?

Stop your victim consciousness, and attack on “white people”. With this attitude you will always be a victim, always blaming others for your circumstance, until you educate yourself and start believing in self-empowerment, these are islanders with a law unto themselves, separate from Denmark, they may be white but definitely far removed from the people I surround myself with. Good and bad in all of us, it is the mental attitude that allows us to separate ourselves from the Matrix of destruction. much love to you

If all those peoples killing those whales, then why don’t kill all those peoples themselves if they get hungry.

Why they were killing those whales because for their babies feeding[humans] and also for their hungry, then why don’t they kill their babies to feed to whales.

Are we all HUMAN have no kind, love, and ….mercy on whales…

PLEASE DENMARK PEOPLE, think about this, please STOP killing those whales , stop realize as like ur human babies killing them as ur own baby for their feeding, hungry…

We Humans are worst than animal. I cannot describe how disgusted i am with the people in Faroe island who do such horrific slaugther of dolsphins. God wrath should fall to this people soon.

  149. January 3, 2010 at 9:15 pm

i am simply without words and this surely is NOT what God desire once created the Universe. If we dont take care OF our world, who will take care. How can world survive without humanity. I hope all the people in Faroe island Denmark and the whole world understand how much wonderful God gift IS to us and God gave it to us for us to take care and not to destroy and abuse it. Please wake up.

i cant believe ignorant people as you but here it goes if we were to behead all of those people that would be genocide and if you were to lead this you would be executed for discrimination of human beings which is far worse than killing non endangered pilot whales for food. frankly your lack of information on the consequences of your beheading of Danes and lack of information in general is astonishing. First this isn’t Denmark this is the Faeroe islands which are a self governing country. Second of all they do this for food. Third of all if you and all these ignorant lobster bags that are complaining about this killing I want all of you to first: Go to an American slaughter house, Second: To be stranded on an island with nothing to eat and all these pilot whales are swimming about wouldn’t you try to do what these people do ?

We will blog, post, and twitter how disgusting Danish people are. The primitive, evil, cruel hearted Danes will regret there image when the whole world knows what brain dead cowards they are for celebrating a tradition of death to the magnificant animals of the sea. These danish humans are subhuman creatures and the world would be better if they went extinct.

I’m sorry but I don’t think anyone in their right mind could compare the quick & painless slaughter of animals that we eat from day to day such as chickens, pigs, cows etc to this. I agree, the slaughter of ANY animal regardless of the purpose is traumatic & inhuman, but to sit their and to agree that the slaughter of thousands of dolphins to prove maturity alone is fucking ridiculous! They slowly kill the dolphins one by one, “They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child’’, FOR WHAT!. Walk a mile in their shoes then you fucking moron an so help me god you will go down like one of these beautiful creatures as I wish the same for the denmark people involved.
They are dying for nothing and you are willing to say this is a righteous cause. Live in Denmark, be another spectator in the crowd and one day I can only prey you suffer the same brutality that these dolphins have endured.

For one, it’s the -Faroe Islands- where this takes place (very far from Denmark itself). The Faroe Islands are a Autonomous constituent country
within the Kingdom of Denmark, so don’t blame Denmark for everything the Faeroes do. Shame on the writer for being ignorant and on everyone else for swallowing it without thinking. But yes, it is an entirely horrific custom, no disagreement on that! D:

This is one of the most horrific, bloodthirsty, REPULSIVE and godless things
I have ever had the misfortunte to see pictures of. I am a VEGETARIAN, so for those
of you who want to compare killing and creating a blood bath for fun to eating chicken,
shut your mouth. I don’t eat meat.

I want you all to be aware that the Fedor Islands has a tourism trade.
Check it out and start a campaign writing to every email address you can find
and tell these people you wouldn’t come to their stinking island and give them
one penny. Tell them you are bouycotting them and you will not be visiting
or in no way will you condone this SICK, DEPRAVED practice.

That these barbarians actually think this proves manhood to slaughter in a cruel
and demented way, to destroy these beautiful, intelligent and FRIENDLY creatures
is just disgusting, and stupid. How does that prove manhood? Dolphins are not
vicious, dangerous, maneating animals, they are animals that are friendly and have
actually come to the aide of mankind!!!! This doesn’t prove manhood, this proves
they are evil, is what this proves. This is like some guy trying to prove he’s a big, tough
manly man by beating a toddler to death, or a physically handicapped person or a very elderly person.
    This only proves evil insanity.

You do realise that the people of the Faroe Islands HUNT these animals, right? They don’t just mindlessly kill them in some maturity ritual, but to gather the meat for eating. They don’t have much else out there in the middle of the ocean, save for livestock on the islands and crops.

It’s the Faroe Islands, not “Fedor Islands”

Also, those are pilot whales, not dolphins, and they’re being killed for food, which has been going on for many, many centuries in the Faroes. Arguments can be made against this, but they should be made with the facts straight.

    Hello everybody,
Can we all gather and find a solution about how to stop these masacres? We have to stop this sick people from killing; does a petition helps? Where can I sign it?
Or is it better to inform the massmedia about it, to inform the National Geographic Channel for example and ask them to create a documentary movie so all people from all around the world will know what is happening in Feroe ? I think in this way the governement from Danemarca will take some action…we have to do something not only put our comments in here.

There’s nothing we have not earned on this planet except inhumanity, lack of conscienceness and cruelty. And that’s just the beginning of it. Not all the nasty words could describe the behaviour of humans as the ones we are seeing in the pictures. However, it’s only one part of the horrific things that are happening in the moment all over the world and each and every one of us visiting this site should post a comment on similar sites and protest, protest and protest again. Perhaps lives, be that of innocent animals or humans, in some cases, should mean something in the end.

It’s up to us to make the world a better place not only for us but also for the friend surrounding us: the loving and innocent animals.

The Faeroe Islands are an autonomous group of islands far to the north of Denmark. Neither Danes, nor the Danish government have any influence in what they do, eat, kill etc.

Danes and Denmark have absolutely nothing to do with this. This is extremely shoddy journalism, and I hope all of you #@#$#@# wishing death, destruction, and shame on Denmark feel really bad for not doing your goddamn research.

Yes – this practice is barbaric but please can the majority of posters please think before embarking on a vitriolic rant. Faroe Islands are not really part of Denmark. The Danish government and people are nothing to do with this. Wishing death and distruction on them without knowing all the facts is as stupid and mindless as what the Faroe Islanders do. READ THIS BEEFORE YOU JUDGE!!

The Faroe Islands have been an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. Over the years, the Faroese have been granted control of most matters. Some areas still remain the responsibility of Denmark, such as military defence and foreign affairs.
Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been practiced since 1584.[15] It is regulated by Faroese authorities but not by the International Whaling Commission as there are disagreements about the Commission’s legal authority to regulate small cetacean hunts. (Wikipedia) Please read that it is regulated by the FAROESE authorities and NOT by the Danish.

Please rewrite this article and place your accusations at the right direction and the right authorities, and before you ever post another article, do your bloody research.

As a 24 year old Dane who had never heard that this was going on, i am speachless after reading this article and how you can actuallt lie to people who do not know better.

This is SOOOOOOO Out of whack.
It isn’t a “test of adulthood”, it’s to survive. It’s expensive to import everything they eat, so they have to use the natural resources given. According to the pictures, the “sea being stained red” is just blood coloring, take some red food coloring and put it into water, you’ll get the same effect.
The whales are completly used, bones to eyeballs to meat, it’s not just “senseless killing”. The spectators are there probably to receive previously payed for food.
Furthermore, Denmark has shit to do with this, as the Faroe Islands make their own decisions on how to get food, and while whaling is also native to the area, there’s a reason it’s still around. Whales are not only nutritious, but plentiful, as only some species are endangered, not all.

If you’re actually stupid enough to go ahead and believe this all without hearing all the facts, I encourage you to the sites which take the other point of view, not just assumptions based off a foreigner’s way of life.

All you close-minded people commenting here should do a tad bit of research before throwing a hissy.

-This is not Denmark, it is the Faroe Islands, and the whales are not killed to show that they are adults, they are killed for food. The whales have been a central part of their diet for over 1,000 years.
-They do not kill Calderon dolphins. They are Pilot Whales and are not near extinction. The Faroes are not involved in commercial whaling and this is a very large part of their culture.
-Of course it looks extremely bloody; it’s in water.
-Look at it this way: The Faroe Islands are a cluster of rocks in the sea, and they don’t have any trees. The population has really only sheep and sea creatures to live off.
-Also, maybe you should think about the way that mass produced livestock is treated in other countries. In comparison, these whales have it way better off. “The kill takes approximately 10 seconds to a few minutes[…]. The hook you see on the pictures is a “dull hook” used to “grab” the blowhole and pull the animal to shore, where the spine is cut swiftly[…]” (Poul Bent)

“I support the Faroe Islanders’ right to slaughter whales humanely and sustainably, for sustenance.
… as opposed to the right of urban-dwelling carnivores to sprout nonsense on blogs after feeding themselves with meat that was farmed unsustainably, cruelly and for profit.” (Andreas)

All of the information I have posted was obtained within a few minutes of research. Good day to you all.

First off, this is not Denmark; This is the Faroe Islands. There aren’t any mountains in Denmark.
Next, They are hunting a type of WHALE, this whale is no where near extinct. They use everything with the whale.
Then, Why should they stop hunting the item they’ve been hunting for a long time? It’s their food source. Just like mass produced farm animals are a food source!!!
Seriously people, stop thinking the wrong ideas.

I think it is well within the rights of the self-ruled Faroe Islands to kill the whales. I mean it’s not like what the Japanese and Chinese call “research” where they go out it huge boats armed and hunt down whales. It’s not for commercial gain and should be allowed.

Too bad a majority of this information is false. They kill them with axes and knives. They kill them because it’s a source of food since there’s not much else on the Faeroe islands – it’s not a ritual or anything to make boys into men. It looks far bloodier because water thins the blood and makes it run more, giving the illusion that there’s a lot more than there really is. These whales aren’t near extinction and they’re NOT called Calderon Dolphins -they’re Pilot Whales! Faeroe is a colony of Denmark, btw.

    January 12, 2012 at 6:52 am

Haha! It’s hilarious how much invalid information is in this article. First off, those aren’t even dolphins. They’re pilot whales. And also, they aren’t even close to near extinction. Besides, it’s not like the Faroe Islanders leave the corpses out like that. The whales are used for food This is not something to do with initiation at all. The Faroe Islands are rocky islands that don’t really have much space for livestock. They have sheep, and sea creatures. And yes, this is NOT Denmark. The Faroe Islands, last time I checked, was not Denmark.

The only reason the sea looks red is because the blood is in the water. If you cut yourself, and put into still water, there’s a similar effect. There is quite a bit, but not as much as it looks.

The weapons used to hunt the whales are not hooks. Knives and axes are more accurate. In fact, the whales are probably given a more humane death than cows sent to an American slaughter house. So these humans are showing probably more kindness to their food as Americans, or any other given country shows their next meal.

The political inaccuracy aside, I find it hilarious that whoever wrote this piteous excuse for an article could not spell, or did not bother with at least checking their terrible spelling and grammar. If they happen to only know English to an extent, I can understand, and ignore the mistakes, although they really shouldn’t be present if they expect anyone to take them seriously.

Going back to the political inaccuracy topic, I still find it hilarious that someone would write an article without any background. If this had any background at all, there wouldn’t be as many demeaning errors as there are now. Why would someone mistake the pilot whale for a Calderon dolphin. Even in the picture there are obvious differences that even I, a high school student, could see. And to write such an offensive article with almost absolutely no background is not only unforgivably stupid, but also immensely hilarious. I know peers in my same grade level, (which is the tenth grade), who could display a more accurate article.

I hope, but highly doubt, that this mere morsel of knowledge will lead to the opening of eyes belonging to those who have been lied to about this topic, and can find it their metaphorical hearts to disregard this entire article so that the truth shall prevail and strike down the misinformed ignorance of those who choose not to research before they make accusations of another society with no real reason.

Can people research? Faroe is a colony of Denmark, but Denmark does not get much say in their affairs. Faroe is a group of rocky islands with little trees. They cultivate animals like sheep, and occasionally pilot whales. These are called pilot whales, even though they are in the dolphin category. Orcas are also dolphins, but they are known as Orca whales. Everyone gets a share of the important meat and oils. Faroe is pretty far away, and it is closer to Scotland and Iceland than Denmark. Most whales die in seconds, because the tools used are specially crafted to minimize suffering. Only about 200-300 are killed every year. There is an estimate that there are at least 60000 of them in the wild, so they are not endangered as above stated. The reason it looks so bloody is because the killing is in water. If shark movies are to be believed, humans turn about a meter square portion of water red if they die in water. These whales are larger than humans, so ir makes sense that the water would be red. Denmark boasts great taxes, and if you consider Faroe being in the middle of the ocean, the taxes are increased due to the amount of money it takes to transport things overseas. If you look at the pictures, the men are in their late 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. That is not exactly ‘coming-of-age’. Whale killing may not please animal lovers, but how would you survive on islands with an average of 28 km squares of farm-able land? Thousands of animals are killed for consumption for non-vegetarians- how are the whales any different?

Don’t believe everything you read. This article has a very opinionated view, which is a sign of over-exaggerated truth.

Those are called Pilot whales and they are nowhere near extinct, hunting these animals is also done in Japan yet I don’t see you getting mad at the Japanese. It’s also noted on a few sites that they’re hunted in Faroe islands which aren’t actually part of Denmark, more of a colony really. Thirdly if you go on wiki and look up Pilot whales they don’t make a noise that can possibly ever sound, even when dying, like a crying baby. Also the meat is eaten it’s not like they’re left there to rot, that’d smell tremendously bad and would be stupid. Coming from one of the claimed “stupidest” countries in the world (USA) it’s hard to believe that you just willingly except that everything in this article is true without doing proper follow up research.

  409. lskfjsldfkj
    January 12, 2012 at 7:46 am

If you find this so horrible, then boycott commercially caught seafood. The people of the Faroe Islands, not the Danes, kill maybe a 1000 whales a year for food, nothing else is accidentally slaughtered. The whale meat goes directly to families for consumption. Commercial fishing, however, kills thousands upon thousands of dolphins, whales, turtles, sharks and unwanted fish and throws them back into the sea. Research shark fishing where only the fins are kept and the rest discarded. Now THAT is sickening, wasteful and cruel. And they do this for money.

You outraged people should step back and think about the meat and fish you eat. Your food was slaughtered, but out of your sight inside buildings where the blood is swept away. This looks so terribly and excessively bloody because it happens in the water and is very visible, but it is no more bloody than regular slaughterhouses or commercial fishing. And these whales are killed very quickly and never suffered a life in a factory farm.

These people have a much more honest and open relationship with their food. They appreciate their food more because they caught it and they know the sacrifice of life that gives them nourishment. You with your pretty plastic packages from your grocery stores are so divorced from the lives of the animals that died to feed you that you barely deserve it.

You may not kill your own food yourself, but you still eat benefit from those killings. So if you think it is wrong to kill whales for food then stop eating beef, pork, chicken, fish or anything else. If you don’t then you’re hypocrites, the lot of you.

Everyone in this thread is retarded; even more than the author. If you knew anything about the Faroe Islands you would know that this is completely false. What the fuck is a Calderon Dolphin? The whale they are killing is called a pilot whale and they are nowhere near extinction. They are AMPHIBIANS they are built to make noise UNDERWATER they don’t make a sound anything like a newborn baby when they die, and even if they did, so what? Is that how we decide what lives and what dies now? Finally, the Faroese islands are rocky and have almost no available land for farming; all that grows is scraggy grass. They don’t kill the whales for some fucking ritual about adulthood; they kill them to EAT them; the only things they can eat are Pilot Whales and Sheep; they don’t have fucking salad bars. Pilot whales are no more intelligent than pigs; but you wouldn’t give up your fucking bacon would you? Everyone on here is ignorant and retarded.

You fuckers need to get your facts straight.

Firstly, this is the island of Faroe. Yes, it’s off the shore of Denmark, but it governs itself.

Secondly, these are not dolphins, but pilot whales and they are NOT near extinction. Hell, they aren’t even considered endangered.

Thirdly, this is not done as some sort of sick tradition, but as a food source. The Faroe islands have been hunting and eating pilot whales since the 16th century. Should they limit the amount of kills and proceed in a more humane manner? Yeah, but they shouldn’t get verbally lynched for it.

Fourthly, how is this any worse than how we treat our stock animals in America? Fuck, pigs are smarter than dogs and, lets face it, most humans as well, but we still “slaughter” them and eat them. Worse, they live in crowded unsanitary pens before being killed and eaten. At least these whales live out there life in freedom before becoming a source of food for a family.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”

Don’t listen to everything you hear on the first go around. Do your fucking research before condemning and entire country.

Not Denmark, No different than any other killing, Not endangered, Not to prove maturity, Etc.

Let’s make this very clear; this author is has not done any research.

Im now making it an objective to go to the Feroe and join in on this amazing culture, kill myself some Pilot Whales, and eat they’re delicious flesh which is the real objective of this hunt.

In the natural circle of life everything dies and gives rise to new life. To worship the PETA God’s every time an animal is killed and even make comments about slaughtering these people instead shows the deep, caring, and intellectual, level of most of the commenters here and by level, I mean none.

Get both sides of the story before you make an ‘article’. This looks awful but they live on an island with very little other than rocks and grass. The sea is their source of food and this pilot whale killing has nothing to do with a ritual or adulthood. This is them getting food supples.
It looks bloody, but have you seen nature documentaries about the ocean? A whale or shark or some creature suffers a bite and the sea turns red, even if there isn’t that much blood.
I also doubt that these people deliberately make the animals suffer. Like any compassionat human that needs to eat, they make the kill as quick and clean as they can.

The whales are foor just like other animals, but at least they get lo live their lives freely before they die, unlike what we “civilized people” do to most farm animals.
Of course the water turns red, try killing such a big animal without getting blood in the water… I´m not from the Farao Islands, but I wont judge people and a culture I havent tries to be a part of, and plees, stop blindly trusting amateur articles online without dooing proper reesearch yourself people!

It’s amazing how little knowledge some people have before cursing and hating on an entire Country. That’s like saying that the whole of America is racist and evil because of the KKK which still exist today! It’s only a very small group who is a part of the KKK, and it’s only a small part of the Faroe Islands inhabiters who take part of this old tradition. It’s NOT everybody’s view or action! We are independent people even though we live under the same flag. One saying that everybody in one country are evil and mean clearly lacks the the fact of this and the knowledge. All white are not fat, all black are not criminal. A whole country doesn’t represent everybody who lives in it!

-The Faroe Islands is a self-governing country!!! It’s a part of Denmark, but Denmark(as the country) don’t have any control over what the Faroe Islands are doing, the same goes for Greenland. So saying that Denmark is a shame to the world is like saying that the whole of Europe is responsible for the Naziism and yew-killing under the 2nd World War. Even though all the countries are a part of Europa doesn’t mean that every country in Europe are the same, the same goes for Asia and EU, the countries under Denmark isn’t the same either!

Please, think things over before you judge people. Either if it’s because of their color, race, religion or country, think about it one more time; does it make sense and is it true? You would do the whole world a favor.

  432. Really now...?
    January 12, 2012 at 7:22 pm

First of all, before you post something like this, you should maybe do a little research into what is ACTUALLY taking place. A “manhood ritual?” Seriously?? Personally, I don’t like hunting, but I DO eat meat and understand the necessity of it. Which do you think is more civilized: going out and hunting your food or raising it from infancy and then turning around and killing it?

Secondly, get your geography right. Any idiot knows that there are no mountains like that in Denmark. The Faroe Islands is a self-governing country under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. Self-governing. This means that while defense and justice and such falls to Denmark, most domestic matters they take care of themselves.

Thirdly, if you’re going to write an article, write an article. Don’t post picture spam and slap on a few captions with atrocious spelling and grammar. It only makes you look like an idiot. Spell/grammar check is there for a reason. Make sure you have your facts straight about the methods involved with what you are protesting, or even what you’re protesting in the first place. What is going on, why is it occurring, who is involved, where is it taking place. These are all questions that you need to answer to write a well rounded, informative piece of literature.

Fourthly, learn the difference between a whale and a dolphin. Seriously.

Finally, if you are so fired up to be against a country mass hunting to provide food and income for it’s citizens, you damn well better be a starving vegetarian. Do you disagree with all hunting/slaughtering? Or just that of large animals that live free in the ocean? Because if that’s the case, you should look into what a low quality slaughterhouse is like and how many stock animals are treated.

I could go on about this in so many ways all day long, but quite frankly, I have better things to do. In a nutshell: Don’t hate, grow up, research, go back to grammar school. Peace.

This article is a pretty big load of bullshit. These whales (not dolphins, by the way) are not near extinction and the relatively small number they hunt every year hardly has an impact on their population.

Yes, it looks gruesome, but seriously, is this more gruesome than millions of animals dying every year in meat mass production? Hardly. You people just make more of a fuss about it because this is more in the open.
I mean … OF COURSE the fucking water is red, that’s only natural because they kill them in it, and color components spread more quickly and widely in water.
But do you people ever think of WHY they might do it? That maybe they NEED it to live? There are still places in this world where people hunt their food themselves, which is perfectly fine. It would be bad if some big corporation would be doing it every day and people would buy the meat cheaply in supermarkets. In this case, however, they hunt them themselves, to eat them. Once a fucking year!

I think if you are able to kill the animals you eat yourselves, you should by all means be allowed to. It’s the way it has been for centuries before capitalism stepped in and pulled it up on the grand scale.

Oh, and two last things to the author of this article: First of all, it’s not denmark, and these creatures are whales, not dolphins. Please research properly before you make a fool of yourself.
Second: Please, PLEASE learn to write proper english, it is an eyesore.

The first step towards being taken seriously is to learn how to spell. If you post something like this on the internet, chances are people will mistake you for a poorly schooled moron.

Also, intelligence has little to nothing to do with whales. Much more intelligent animals are being mass produced and killed for their meat.

    Hypocrite.

It amuses me to read articles like this. From the spelling and other mistakes in this article, i would assume that it’s written by either a 10 year old or some unschooled fuck, who has too much time on his hands.
When your write an article, it would be good if you did a little research before you post shit like this. Like dozens of other articles like this one, there is a major lack of truth to be found. The whales do not suffer, they are killed in the most humane way possible, with a spear kind of thing, which is penetrated to the spine, killing the whale in less than a sec. And it’s not a adulthood test for the teens. I hope you ignorant, stupid fucking bastards could find another hobby or if you select to proceed with this hobby, do some research before you post shit like this.

    January 13, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Oh my god. This article is ridiculous. It’s something I would have done when I was 12 or something. I’m not much older now, but I certainly am wiser. All the mistakes there… The writer hasn’t investigated the thing at all, it seems. “Sea stained red”, “a cry of a baby”… What a drama queen.

If you want to say “YOU WOULD BE HORRIFIED IF THEY WERE HUMEN!!!!1111″, hear this: I would. I’m sure the “dolphins” would be very horrified, if they read this article. But I’m not a dolphin.

If you don’t eat meat at all, I understand if you’re horrified. But hey, all you meat-eaters: show me the difference. Show me the difference between a whale and a pig.

Next time you want to write something like this, Google is a good friend. And sleep over the night first, then think of it again. If it still feels the same, go ahead. But put there some infromation, pretty pretty please. Nobody’s gonna take you seriously.

    And I’m not a Dane. ;D I’m a Finn.

I would love for you to, one day, meet an entity superior to you (believe me, humans aren’t the peek of the mountain, they just haven’t met their adversary yet) that will deem you worthless and begin to torture you for hours and hours on the account of you not matching its superior configuration.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/3104494.stm

Everyone here should read up on this before getting their panties in a knot.

Like many others I was brought here by an online artist who made a comic about this article, and I decided to do a little reading myself before making a comment based on what her comic presented.
Aside from the topics discussed already about the fallacies of this article, it’s important I think to note that Pilot Whale meat (because these are, indeed Pilot Whales, not endangered dolphins) contains a very high level of mercury.

From the article I linked, “Ironically, rights activists and Faroese do agree on one thing. The recent discovery of high levels of mercury, insecticides and other toxins in pilot whales means that whale meat consumption may have to be reduced. Pregnant mothers on the islands have been counselled not to eat it. Surely, my friends pointed out, rather than attempting to block a traditional and sustainable harvest, environmentalists would better focus their energies on preventing the slow poisoning of the seas, which in the long run pose a far greater threat to the whales, and to us all.”

People on the internet see what appears to be horrific photos of brutal slaughter and attack without bothering to think or read first. A number of intense animal rights activists jump at the opportunity to ‘save’ animals without bothering to think things through. For starters, this is another country, and it’s up to them and their activists whether or not this mass hunt continues. Anyone who comments on articles like these and are not a member of the country mentioned need to learn to keep out of others business. At least here in the USA, there are far more brutal animal killings than what’s presented by the Faroes.

To be honest, I think animal rights activists should keep their self righteous opinions to themselves on matters like these. Like stated in the article, better to focus our energies to stop the environmental poisoning of our planet. That’s what’s going to kill everything if it’s not fixed. And I don’t say this to be “oh humans are so horrible blah blah blah ruin everything”, because obviously humans and nature coexisted fine in the past. Humans as a whole just need to be more aware and more concerned for the well being of the planet and it’s creatures- not throw themselves into outrageous bouts of anger over trivial matters or pity themselves for how ‘horrible’ they are.

Act like responsible adults for once and take responsibility for what’s really the problem. Don’t put it all on the Faroes or Denmark because they hunt whales to survive.

  450. Anonymous

Wow Talk about a fail. This is the most poorly put together animal rights act I’ve ever seen. The grammar is horrible, there looks like a lot a blood because the water is spreading it and a big animal like that will have a lot of blood anyway. Those were obviously whales. (as posted by some people who do know about this subject) and I didn’t see one teen in any of those photos. If you want to complain about something complain about the mass slaughtering of animals that are walked into a pen where they slip on blood from the animals that went before them and have a hammer gun put to their head that sometimes doesn’t kill them but only knocks them out. How could these people even raise the animals needed to sustain themselves with so little vegetation and trees for shade or shelter building. Looks cold in that water too.

I eat pork, beef and chicken. Pigs, cows and chickens are all intelligent, social creatures, if given half the chance. If we left them to their own devices, we’d see how smart they really are, but we don’t. We kill them before they get a chance to really develop.

The people of the Faroe Islands eat whales. I suppose if it were practical and economical to do so, they’d raise and kill pigs, cows and chickens to eat, just like I do? But they can’t. It’s funny when people say, “You can just buy meat at the store!”, but they never think about where that meat comes from, or how much it costs.

You can’t see all the blood and guts behind your package of mince/hamburger, because it’s kept inside the abattoir. Bottom line? We all gotta eat. And until we figure out how to raise meat in vats, something is going to die, be it in a nice, unseen abattoir on the far end of town, or on the beach in front of the cameras.

    People are so stupid!

You look at what you ate today, yesterday, last week, last month! I bet, if you aren’t vegan or vegetarian than you ate MEAT. This is what these people are doing, except they have the BALLS to kill the animal themselves and try to do it in the best way possible without endangering the species. To me that sounds like INTELLIGENT eating. Just because you don’t have to kill your food doesn’t make the killing of cows, pigs or chickens any less important. What about the cages they had to live in their entire lives where as these whales where never tortured before they were used as a means for food.

I’m vegan and I say- This is NOT barbaric, the way factory farms treat cattle, pigs and chickens IS BARBARIC!

It’s pathetic how you can eat beef, pork or poultry and not think it’s sinful or barbaric, it’s sad to see how you can eat without thinking, just shoving your face with animal flesh and then be a hypocrite and calling this a horror.

Maybe you should learn to be less ignorant.

  458. January 15, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I would like environmentalist organizations more if they would only stop making stupid crap up and try to make sense and understand the naunces of issue for once.

:cue obnoxious red text: They’re killing endangered dolphins! Oh, those are whales, sorry, we only pretend to care enough about them to be able to tell the difference, seriously, don’t try to tell me you could tell me the difference between a puppy and a lamb… and they don’t use hooks, you say, and they don’t do it to show they’re real men and… what do you mean the Faeroes are not in Denmark?!”

…and then they have the arrogance to tag the article with a call for “public awareness”. Which I suppose translates to “please do your own research, because we’re sure as hell not going to do more than learn to post pictures on a website and give them angry made-up captions in some obscene bright red boldface font”.

This can barely called an article. These are just pictures with red captions on top of them, no story, no refrain from insults, and it tries to amateur-ly makes people sad. Boo hoo. The person/people obviously didn’t do their research, and they include the wrong people. This is Faroe Island, yes it is a colony of Denmark, but look at the clue word: island. What are they supposed to eat? Dogs? Cats? Pig?
The person who posted this up are those people who uselessly surf the web until they find some gossip they didn’t know about, and then stretch the truth on the final version. I do agree however, that the pictures were displeasuring and disgusting to look at. Who cares? Really, you might be ‘horrified’ or your heart is ‘broken’, by looking at the ‘baby-screaming whales’ or dolphins or whatever, but it’s not like your actually doing something. So, your just another person feeling sad for something that is completely not your business. This has consumed my time, even though I was only sent here by reading some comics. And, are you actually expecting some nature preserve or animal helper fucktards reading this? As some users above, you need to spell, not make the typography neon red like it’s some world problem, and learn the facts. You probably thought that right after you posted this little shit that people will be all:
‘OMG THOSE DOLPHINS ARE SO POOR!!!1112@@!!’
Then you see the first comment that makes sense of this nut job ‘article’. Your reaction is either:
”OMYGOD, THE PERSON IS SO MEAN AND HEARTLESS!!1 I JUST WANTED TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT!!111@!!!’
or, that you finally see how idiotic you are.
As for the supporters for this ridiculous piece of garbage, you might think that you have a solid argument, but those simple pictures are trash. Shit. Garbage. Twaddle. Bull. Whatever what the sensible people want to call it.
If you see yourself in the lines of my written text, congratulations, your entire being is an idiotic and retarded one.
And for the even more retarded ‘thing’ (yes, I am now calling you an ‘it’), if you resort to the excuse of age, cry in another corner. Age can be used for insults, but it is usually just an excuse. Age does not refrain you from doing such, it’s a thing. But since you and age are both things, maybe it would be appropriate for you to use it.
Now, I shall use age as an insult: I am a twelve year old, almost thirteen, and I did not edit this one bit. I did not look over, and I didn’t use a dictionary. If any of you are seniors or higher graders who can’t type proper english, then sweetie, go back to kindergarten.

    2. Those animals are not dolphins they are pilot whales! WHALES! They’re no where near extinction
    3. They don’t do it as some random adult test they do it to survive because they live on a big rock with no vegetation so all they can eat is what they catch in the sea and sheeps.
    4. They don’t use hooks they use knifes and axes.
I really hope that some of you agnorant people would read this so you can see that Faeroe killing whales is just as normal and humane as Americans killing cows.

The ignorance both from the writer of the article, and some posters here is staggering.

It’s whales, not Dolphins. And for everyone talking about the friendly intelligent dolphins… educate yourself. Dolphins may be intelligent, but they are not pleasant creatures. They kill for fun(baby porpoises are a common toy for the bigger dolphin), and they not only rape their own, but they have a surprisingly high rate of attempting to rape other animals(such as humans). Just because you think they look nice and cute doesn’t mean they are such.

Secondly, these whales are not endangered.

Thirdly, the methods used are more pleasant than breeding animals for slaughter.

Fourthly, the Faroes rely on this to survive. What you are essentially saying about stopping the hunting is: Have fun starving to death out there lololol.

Fifthly, the Faroes have their own government, and are thus only tied to Denmark in the most stretched of ways.

    This article is all wrong.
    1. I’ve heard these are actually pilot whales that aren’t near extinction.
    2. It’s not Denmark; it’s a little island near them called the Faroe Islands
    3. They don’t use hooks. They use knives and axes. And the sea only looks bloody because it’s water, so blood spreads out more easily.
    4. They kill them to eat them. It’s like us eating cows.

  478. Kail
    January 29, 2012 at 10:18 pm

Just saying that, first off, those are pilot whales. Second, they are not killed with hooks, but with extremely sharp knives to make their deaths as quick as possible. Third, yes, the whale does cry out when it is killed, but it is not comparable to the cry oof a newborn baby. Fourth, this is NOT a rite into adulthood. Older males would have a difficulty wrestling a three ton whale, don’t you think? They kill the whales for food, not for sport. Seeing as Faroe is pretty much a pile of rocks populated by sheep and people, eating whales seems pretty reasonable. The red in the water is also easily explainable: You’re in the water, one little droplet of blood turns a glass of water red, the sea will evidently look like this during the hunt. It does not mean it is ‘stained red’. Do your research before you go posting srticles riddled with mistakes.

A little bit of research would be good in the future.
They don’t kill the animals to “show that they are adult and mature”, they do it to eat. The reason it’s mainly young men is that the task is hard physically and young men are biologically the best designed to perform the task without injuring themselves as they generally are stronger, have better stamina and are more flexible.

Secondly, the Faroe Islands are goverened independently from Denmark so you can’t really blame Denmark for this.

Thirdly, please, sort out your grammar and if you’re going to write an article, please do so with full sentences and in a more profesional manner.

Lastly, you can flood the internet with bloody and gruesome pictures, but have you ever cut yourself in a swimming pool? Blood goes EVERYwhere. Things like this always look worse in the sea. Besides, at least these animals have been allowed to live a happy life swimming in the sea and haven’t been kept in teeny tiny cages, fed on scraps and never allowed to see the outside because they’ve been reared in a battery farm. Or have had their homes destroyed by deforestation, or their parents or babies killed from poaches who only want their skin. There are countries commiting far more horrendous crimes against animals than this, so I really don’t think they can be classed as “a big shame to whole world”

That doesn’t mean I don’t care about animals and animal rights however. I’ve been a strict vegetarian since I was 12, and have several rescue cats and dogs. I care deeply about animals, but that doesn’t mean I will support a badly written, ill-informed and downright embarassing article.

Though at least your intentions were good, and the fact that you DO care enough to write about what you thought was a serious act of animal cruelty means that you’re a better person that a lot of people in this world. Just, do a bit more research in the future to avoid upsetting people with false accusations.

  490. Ditte

    Jezes.
This is not at brutal “just for the fun of it” killing spree of poor whales.
The farao island, does not own the clima to grow vegetables and other crops.
They live from farm animals, and fishing (and in this case, whales)
There is special rules, and restrictions as to how many of these whales they can catch and how they are supposed to do it. These restrictions have been there, as long as people has been catching those whales. They are not ment as an “See, i’m becoming a man” It’s caught as food, and those pictures, shows the amount of whales, supposed to feed most of the people on the farao island, for half of the year.

When the whales are spotted, fishermen sails out and surround them, makeing them swim in to the shore. Whales who swims away, are not allowed to be followed.
In shallow water, the fishermens kills the whales with ONE blow of a very sharp knife, specially made for killing this kind of creature.
The hooks are used to drag the whales in, when they are killed.

And yes. It looks bloody. But it is in the fricking water people.
It take’s a few drops og blood, to colour a glass of water red.

The farao islands, are as much a part of Denmark, as greenland.
Which means, Denmark has NOTHING to do with the country, until they do something, that affects us.
How they FEED their people, is none of our concern.

    And just for the record.
The amount of caldreon dolphins killed yearly, is nothing compared to the rest of the worlds massive overproduction of farm animals, whom suffers more than these whales ever will.

So please. Do not make judgement based og bloody pictures, and carefully chosen lines.
    Do your research.

I am willing to bet that over half of the people writing comments about how horrible this is, are eating cheeseburgers from mcdonalds made from mass produced cows that never get to see freedom and are killed in a strange, unfamiliar environment filled with cold steel equipment everywhere, after being transported in the backs of cramped trailers (usually) over several hours from the fenced in cages they’ve known their whole lives.

I think it’s funny how none of the people who have been criticizing a “horrible ritual from denmark” have ever replied to a comment correcting them on what’s actually happening in the pictures, I can only hope that they figured out what this process actually is and that they learn to not judge others before thinking about what they’ve done and whether or not what they’re reading is true or not.

I love how ignorant you people are. This is Faroe, not Denmark, and it’s part of their culture. So what? I’m absolutely certain that they kill them in humane ways. That, and we do the same thing to cows, chickens and pigs… Pretty much. That’s always a bloodbath. Don’t dis people for their culture. It’s cruel and rude.

Our world is full to bursting with idiots who can’t tell facts from fiction and roughly 90% of the comments are from idiots.

Oh what a world with such people in it.

Learn your facts and realize that nature is not the pretty “everyone hugs and gets along” delusion that you all think it is. Nature’s color is blood red. Animals kill and eat each other on a daily basis, without morality. Get your self righteous heads out of your ASSES and accept that humans are nothing but animals following our instincts.

Many countries treat their farm animals worse than this! Male piglets are castrated without anesthesia, male chicks are tossed into grinders shortly after birth (while still alive), chickens are kept in cages that aren’t big enough to move for their entire lives, and that’s just naming a few! I would say more, but I’m sure some of these people will just ignore it, and go right back to interfering with things that they don’t even fully understand.

I am only going to say this once: THIS is a pure hoax, I’ve been working against this for over a year now and I am tired of people without proof starting a fire like this.
The Pilot Whales (NOT DOLPHINS) are not near extinction.
Get your facts straight: They’re not killed with hooks (not hocks), they’re killed, as humanly as possible, with axes and other weapons designed to kill them fast.
They’re killed FOR FOOD, it’s the only source of meet besides sheep that they have.
It is NOT Denmark! We consider them a part of Denmark, but merely spiritually.

Another thing is that water has the ability to blend with blood, making the pool look a lot more gory than it actually is.

Do some research, ask legitimate sources, spend some time on your grammar and write something instead of slapping a few poorly written captions on a bunch of pictures.

Anyone saying Denmark is a shame: Have you seen what is going on in the world? How many animals, like leopards, cheetahs, wolves, Elephants and so on, are near extinct thanks to safari hunting. Correct me if I’m wrong, but are most safari-trips not arranged by American societies?

These people (mentioned in the article) are hunting for food, survival. Safari-hunters and poachers are hunting for selfish reasons and greed. Quit the pseudo-caring and face reality please. Do ask me for links, evidence and arguments to my views, I’ll gladly enlighten anyone who believes this is real and the worst thing that happens to animals.
